The General Register Office is responsible for the legislation surrounding civil registration in Ireland and the place where all records concerning births, stillbirths, marriages, civil partnerships, adoptions and deaths in Ireland since 1920 are stored.

1. How to apply for certificates of birth, stillbirth, adoption, marriage, civil partnership or death?
All these certificates can be obtained online at the website of the network of local civil registration offices all over Ireland. To apply for these documents by post you need to fill in the applicable Certificate Application Form and send it to the address provided.
Please note that while the registration of birth, stillbirth, adoption, marriage, civil partnership or death is free, the standard fee for a certificate is €20.
2. How to obtain a Certificate of Freedom to Marry?
In order to get married or enter into a civil partnership abroad as an Irish national, the legal requirements of this country have to be met. Information about these requirements can be obtained from the civil registration office of the country in question.
A Certificate of Freedom to Marry is required in several countries and can be obtained online from theDepartment of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Certificate of Freedom to Marry is also known as Civil Letter of Freedom, Certificate de Coutume or Nulla Osta.
3. How to apply for a certificate of civil, family, marital status in Ireland?
To obtain a letter stating that a person is not married in Ireland, a so-called certificate of civil, family or marital status, and the person was born outside of Ireland, an application to the General Register Office has to be made in writing. The General Register Office needs the name of the person, their date of birth and the years during which the person was eligible to marry.
